Alpha hydroxy acids have started a skin care revolution touted as a fountain of youth. However, recent research shows that alpha hydroxy acids may possibly be detrimental to your skin. Alpha hydroxy acids slough off the outer layers of skin, leaving new skin - plump with moisture and extremely sensitive and vulnerable on the surface. Initially, this makes our skin look smooth and young. However, because alpha hydroxy acids dissolve the intercellular "glue" that holds the surface skin cells together, they are a repeated irritation to the skin.
Research shows that prolonged use of alpha hydroxy acids may worsen the signs of aging over time. Studies in which a 10% alpha hydroxy acid solution was applied to skin for ten weeks showed a temporary reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. When the application stopped, wrinkles appeared deeper than before the treatment. WHY? The skin becomes inflamed with the acid application, and in response to the inflammation, enzymes in the skin are triggered. These enzymes then begin devouring the collagen proteins that provide the skin's cellular structure.
In another study, scientists discovered that alpha hydroxy acids cause a lipid, which is found in every cell membrane, to further irritate the skin, especially when exposed to free radicals. Every day, skin is damaged by thousands of free radical "hits" from UV light, pollution, smoke, and from the cell's natural energy production cycle. Alpha hydroxy acids may contribute to this damage.
Alpha hydroxy acids, which appear to be temporarily effective by making your skin look younger and healthier today, may be counterproductive in the end, since long term use could be detrimental to the health of your skin.
For these reasons, Jakaré has chosen not to use alpha hydroxy acids in any of our products. Essential oils are used instead, which can produce similar results safely without long term damage.
