By mid-September, our summer glow is fading and the effects of “fun in the sun” is evident – our skin can feel and look dry and dehydrated, even flaky and itchy. A fun, inexpensive and highly effective solution to rejuvenate your skin is a simple sugar or salt scrub once a week for one month. A scrub will deeply cleanse and exfoliate away old skin and improve the flow of nutrients to the skin’s surface. The result: skin that is super hydrated, soft and glowing.

Experiment with either salt or sugar, combined with one or more of the oils listed below.

The formula is simple: fill a pint jar half full of salt or sugar and slowly pour oil into the jar until fully saturated and 1/2 inch above the salt or sugar. To use, simply stir with a spoon and scoop out approximately 1/4 to 1/2 cup. In the shower, wet your body with water, step away from the direct spray and begin gently scrubbing your entire body in a circular motion. Pay particular attention to knees, elbows and heels. Rinse and pat dry with towel.

To store, keep covered in a cool, dry place, and use within 3 weeks.

Ingredient options:

Dead Sea salt. Cleansing, detoxing, exfoliates and revitalizes the skin and helps draw out toxins. More expensive.

Sea salt. Naturally harvested and contains minerals to help draw toxins from the skin. Less expensive.

White or brown sugar. Excellent exfoliating ingredient that gets rid of dead skin and leaves skin feeling smooth and soft. May be organic and raw if you prefer.

Jojoba oil. Actually a liquid wax, it most closely resembles the natural sebum within our skin and thus it absorbs very well into the skin. Naturally anti-inflammatory and high in anti-oxidants.

Coconut oil. Karie’s favorite! Needs to be gently heated to a pouring consistency when combining with the salt or sugar. Great for dry and sensitive skin, will not clog pores and
absorbs quickly. Non-greasy and lightweight. Resistant to becoming rancid.

Olive oil. Helps regenerate new skin cells. Soothes inflamed skin. Keeps skin from drying out by attracting external moisture to the skin while still permitting it to release perspiration and shed dead skin cells.

Almond oil. Excellent skin softener and conditioner. Penetrates easily and good for dry, itchy or inflamed skin and conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Rich in essential fatty acids.
